Beyond The Emerging/Emergent/Postmodern Church: What We Really Yearn For

1 09 2006

Getting past the trendiness of the emerging church, I think that it is fair to say that  there is a hunger out there that even ladies at EmergentNo share with emerging types. I think we all yearn for heaven to come down to earth and for God to brush up against us in tangible ways. We look at passages and like Acts 2, 4 and 13, and read the history of Moravian Church, and we desire to have the same kind of experience. Who in their right mind would not want and long for the palpable presence of God? We want to belong, to know as we are known, to experience deep community with the saints. To not long for this, to not yearn for this, is to not truly be Christian and human.

So when I hear of people using term like “house church”; “simple church”; “ancient-future faith”, “authentic community”, I see that as code for wanting to recapture what is described in the book of Acts, and I don’t think that there is anything wrong with that kind of desire.
